Drawing Inspiration from Maine's Wild Places: Introducing Eliza Goodwin - Our Newest Artist
There's something magical about artists who can capture the essence of Maine in their work - especially on such small canvases like dog collars! Our intern from RISD, Eliza Goodwin, brings that magic to Belted Cow Company with her fresh perspective and distinctive style. A Freeport native, Eliza's connection to Maine runs as deep as the roots of our towering pines, and it shows in every design she creates.
When asked about her favorite place to work on creative projects, Eliza's face lights up as she describes her grandparents' house on Belgrade Lake. "There's something special about Maine lakes," she shares, explaining how the local wildlife and flora become living inspiration for her designs. The birds, plants, and natural patterns she observes while fully immersed in Maine's wilderness find their way into her artwork, including her favorite creation for Belted Cow - a charming puffin design that manages to be quintessentially Maine while maintaining a playful edge.
Her artistic process thrives on community, something she discovered during her time at RISD. "I love being in a room with other artists," Eliza explains. "I find it inspiring, and it's helpful to critique each other's work." This collaborative spirit has led her to form strong bonds within both ceramic and illustration communities, enriching her artistic journey.
Adventure feeds her creativity, with travels to Iceland and Hawaii informing her perspective. However, it's Maine's mountains and trails that truly have her heart. You might find her skiing down Maine's slopes in winter or tackling Tumbledown Mountain's infamous "Fat Man's Misery" path in summer, following in her avid hiker parents' footsteps.
When she's not designing for Belted Cow or crafting her figural ceramics (her favorite medium), you might spot Eliza at Flatbread Company in Portland, enjoying her favorite local fare. Or perhaps she's curled up with a good book, though her true passion lies in creating art that speaks to Maine's natural beauty.
Looking ahead, Eliza hopes to assist an established ceramicist or sculptor after graduation, but for now, we're thrilled to have her creative energy and unique vision contributing to our collection. Her designs, whether featuring her beloved puffins or inspired by Belgrade's serene waters, bring a fresh perspective to our products while honoring Maine's natural heritage.
Stay tuned for Eliza's upcoming designs - they're sure to make you look at Maine's beauty in a whole new way. After all, creating accessories as unique as the people wearing them has always been our goal, and Eliza's artistic vision fits right in with that mission.
Welcome to the Belted Cow family, Eliza!
